What Is Data Validator?

Data Validator is a tool within Experian B2B Prospector, which checks to see if your purchased data still exists as a valid record in Experian’s BusinessView Select Database.

For each record uploaded into Data Validator, you can choose whether to check the business’ name and address, email, phone number and Telephone Preference Service (TPS and CTPS) status. Only the fields you select will be checked when uploaded to Data Validator. So, it’s important to check all the data fields you use, or intend to use, for marketing purposes.

By checking to see if your data still exists within Experian’s BusinessView Select database, you are checking whether your purchased data is still valid to use for the marketing purpose you acquired it – helping support your compliance with the GDPR.

How will I know if I can continue to use my purchased data?

The file you download after processing will contain one of the following 3 validation flags, indicating whether that record still exists within Experian’s database - BusinessView Select and is valid to use:

  1. ‘Y’ indicates this data still exists within BusinessView Select- this is considered valid to contact and can be used for the reason it was purchased. Please note, the opposite logic applies for the TPS field where ‘Y’ indicates the record cannot be contacted by telephone.
  2. ‘N’ indicates this data can no longer be validated within BusinessView Select- this record no longer exists and is not valid for use. Please note, the opposite logic applies for the TPS field where ‘N’ indicates the record can be contacted by telephone.
  3. 'BLANK' indicates where you haven't provided a specific data point (e.g. email address) within a record to be matched – the field will be empty.

What should I do if a record no longer exists?

When a purchased record is no longer valid within BusinessView Select, this means you should stop using this data within your marketing campaigns.

There may be various reasons why the record no longer matches; however, one of the most likely reasons is that the data subject (the individual) has objected to the use of their data for marketing purposes. This is an absolute right under the GDPR and therefore you should no longer use that record.

How often should I check the validity of my data?

Experian’s BusinessView Select database is updated monthly. To ensure your purchased data is as up to date as possible, it is recommended that you check your data using Data Validator at least every 30 days.
