Will council tax arrears damage my credit score?
I have got a joint account for my council tax bill with my partner. I’m a tenant and for some reason I haven’t paid my council tax bill for some time. They’ve sent me a court letter and a bailiff’s letter as well, which I will later sort out with them. Now my question is, will this affect my credit score?
Your council tax debt will not affect your credit rating. Councils do not share information about council tax debts with the credit reference agencies. Even if the debt is referred to court, this would be the Magistrates’ court in England and Wales, because non-payment of tax is treated as a criminal not a civil matter. Fines imposed by Magistrates’ courts do not appear on credit reports either. (April 2012)
